I love making my own taco seasoning at home because it’s versatile, and I can measure out exactly what I need, which means no more folded half pouches of taco seasoning hiding in the back of the spice cabinet.

This mild homemade taco seasoning is also easily customizable if you or someone in your family likes things a little on the spicier side. And it’s as easy to make as it is versatile! I use it to season my Black Bean Taco Soup.

You can also use it as you would a standard store-bought seasoning packet for ground beef or turkey tacos. Or try it as a dry rub on some grilled or sauteed chicken or shrimp. You are going to love this easy taco seasoning recipe!

  • Chili powder – you can use light or dark chili powder
  • Ground coriander
  • Ground cumin
  • Paprika
  • Cornstarch helps keep the spices from binding together in the jar and helps thicken the taco meat.
  • Diamond Crystal Kosher salt flakes – if you are using table salt (like Morton’s, for example), use half the amount of salt called for in the recipe.

Substitutions & alterations

  • Add 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika or chipotle seasoning to increase the depth of flavor and add a bit of smokiness to your taco seasoning blend.
  • Add ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to add some extra heat to the seasoning mix.
  • You can use arrowroot powder instead of cornstarch.
